Watercolor of Great Horned Owl flying at night
Bats and Owls have always intrigued me. They are nocturnal and fly quietly. They are excellent at keeping the number of rodents in check. Some large cities could use raptors to help control, seagulls, starlings and the rodent populations. We cannot however use harmful chemicals or poisons in the area or the raptors could be killed.
We have had a Screech Owl in my neighborhood for many years. He would visit my yard at dusk and sit in the Sassafras tree, a small Owl under 10 inches tall, its call is a whirring sound not a screech. The house next door put a security light on the building that spooked him from that spot when he came to visit this year. To my delight a few weeks later he found a spot in another yard he was comfortable with and started calling. The night sound was a longer than usual a beautiful sound.

Maryland, July 19, 2019, is the song I heard a few weeks ago.

The two images are of the Great Horned Owl. A powerful hunter who will eat not only rodents but groundhogs and rabbits.
Bats are spooky because they are nocturnal quiet predators. You can put up bat houses, This will help cut the populations of Mosquitoes, moths, beetles, and flies. One bat can eat up to 1,000 in one hour. Poisons or pesticides cannot be used in the area.
